Oh No! One Life to Live Debbie Downer alert!

As reported in TV Guide's June 18 issue, One Life to Live has decided to kill off Phil Carey's beloved character, Asa Buchanan. The much-married, conniving cowboy will bite the dust off camera in August.

Sigh.

Carey made his debut on OLTL in 1979. His Asa was established as the ornery patriarch of the billionaire Buchanan clan, who relocated from Texas to romance the ladies of Llanview, Pennsylvania.

Back in the late '70s and early '80s, the daytime soaps loved to copycat the hit primetime sudsers, so viewers saw lots of characters inspired by the success of Dallas. Hence, the Buchanans of OLTL. Another World even launched a short-lived spinoff soap, Texas, which aired from 1980-82. But I digress...

As I reported right here, Carey's contract expired in April '07 and he refused to go on recurring status. For the record, his last airdate was Thursday, April 26.

It's just a pity Carey will have no on-screen farewell — especially since the soap veteran wowed us all by returning to OLTL last fall, after he had survived lung cancer.

I do understand that there are egos and economics at odds here, but it seems like Carey and his fans deserve a better resolution for Asa's Life than an off-screen demise. It's hard for me imagine our blustery Asa just going quietly into that good night.

OMG, I truly never expected that Nathan would come back as Joey. Can I now dream that he has scenes with Robin? Be still my heart.

This is great news, huh? It makes me hopeful. I found this clip at youtube.com of the Bukes in the old days. It made me smile.

This is a nice surprise, especially if they actually do have all the living Buchanan men return. I hope there's some publicity shots out of it with the new Clint - of course Asa won't be there, and CJ won't be there, but they have to do a picture (or many :)) of Clint, Bo, Cord, Kevin, Joey, Max?, and Matthew.

Considering NF wasn't the last Joey, I think they asked him back because he was the most popular one, and most likely because he was the one who worked with Robin. It's a golden opportunity to have his Joey react to Dorian being with Clint.

I am really getting excited about this. If Nathan is coming back as Joey it's because they want him to have interaction with Dorian. Nobody believed that Dorian could have slept with Donny Jeffcoat's Joey, so why bother bringing him back if they want to make the connection between Dorian being involved with both Joey and Clint. Seeing Joey's reaction to Clint and Dorian together will be priceless. I'm sure Joey has heard about it, but seeing it will be something else. Can we hope the first time Dorian sees him his shirt will be off? Remember the first time Dorian saw Donny Jeffcoat's Joey his shirt was off? Her reaction was great - and of course within minutes she as telling Joey that she was with Mel, a real man!

Yup, I want to see Joe's reaction to Clint/Dorian, too. I think he'll be OK with it. But it's that kind of dicey stuff that makes soaps interesting while tying into the history of the characters. Wonder if Clint will still call "Joe" "Joey"? And yeah Gin, I remember Joe coming down the stairs of the cottage house and Dorian being startled. Memories. It's been awhile and Dorian has a "real man" this time, too. And this time it's Joe's father.

So much to work with. Remember the time Clint came over to Dorian's demanding that she not see Joey. I think Joe was upstairs at the time.

I didn't see that when it originally aired. But it's up at dorianvideos.com.
