A Couple of Things...
The late Michael Zaslow (pictured above with Strasser) was arguably one of the most charismatic actors to grace Daytime Television. I am no great soap historian but I am a longtime viewer of soaps who is aware of Zaslow's Roger Thorpe on Guiding Light and of course his OLTL character David Renaldi. What I found of interest this week is my viewing of several clips on youtube.com that involved the break up of couples. The man in the middle of both break ups on clips that I viewed was played by Michael Zaslow.
Guiding Light 1990 Roger & Holly--A Talk About RogerFrom:rogholfan
11.27.90. In the midst of the Alan-Michael's shooting/kidnapping
of Blake storyline, this Ross/Holly interlude reveals her in all her Hedda
Gabler-esque dysfunction. The scene begins with Ross warning Holly
about his investigation of Blake, and ends with their learning about
A-M's shooting. Holly has come to Ross's house to pick up some things
and return the engagement ring. The scenes above occurred after Holly, who was previously married to Roger, is discovered by her fiance Ross (played by Jerry verDorn) with Roger in Acapulco. To Ross, it would appear Holly has lingering feelings for Roger. Holly and Roger didn't sleep together but the connection between the characters contributed to the break up of Holly and Ross. There are 23 parts to this saga that involves Ross as Alex
sets up a weekend in Acapulco for Holly and Roger to test
her husband Roger's fidelity.Similarly on OLTL, Dorian's first love and the father of her child, David Renaldi, showed up in Llanview as a concert pianist. He and Dorian decided to conceal David's real identity, which eventually was discovered by Dorian's daughter Cassie and Dorian's husband Herb. What plays out below are two separate scenes. The first one involves David telling Dorian that Cassie knows his true identity and the second scene is of Herb walking out on Dorian because she lied to him and hurt him terribly with her affair of the heart with David.
On 5.14.08 these clips were
added to the Tribute page of the DIVA Gallery.
They are both from Jonathan Richards.

Clip from 1983 when David R. tells Dorian he has told Cassie
he is her father and Dorian becomes furious. Robin Strasser's
at her best here.

Great scene where Herb walks out on Dorian. Robin Strasser
and Anthony Call together...magical. From 1983, Strasser is
perfect in these scenes and some of Tony Call's best scenes
on OLTL in the '80's.
All of this said, it caused me to ponder what causes a soap pairing to endure even when they are no longer romantically together. Sure enough, it helps to have powerhouse performers but I also believe much of the responsibility is that of the writer, who respects history and is committed to solid storytelling that does not insult the intelligence of the audience. By that I mean, pretending the characters don't share a history when storyline goes in a different direction. There is a history and it should be used to contribute to future storytelling, much the way Dorian's breakup with Clint spurred the Buchanan Enterprises takeover story. I also think it important for the writer to take chances and to do something different and less predictable. Does anyone really know how the BE story will come out in the end? dncla.jpg I still maintain the particular dynamics of a relationship can continue even if the pair are not romantically together. After all, the flip side of love is hate in varying degrees. No matter, it generates the same level of the intensity and curiosity.
Michael Zaslow won an Outstanding Lead Actor Emmy in 1994 for his portrayal of Roger Thorpe on Guiding Light. He died of Lou Gehrig's Disease in 1998.
